Do you drink any sports drinks or water on the way round the course?
I usually only drink water on the course and sometimes I take electrolytes with me, however I might take a sports drink when I feel a bit dehydrated and have less energy, but I tend to try to manage my glycogen levels with food and water.
When you play a new course like the Volvo Champions in Bahrain do you do any extra preparation?
Possibly – I might arrive a day early (Sunday) so that I can play 18 holes practice over the Monday and Tuesday. If I know the course I will arrive on Monday, practice Tuesday and usually play the pro am on the Wednesday.
When you are off the course can you switch off from golf and relax or are you always thinking about your game?
I need to distract myself when I’m off the course so that I don’t think about my game – if my family are there this is easy, and if I go to the cinema I can switch off but If I sit and do nothing I will definitely think about my game! If I can talk about my game for 15 minutes or so to get it off my mind and to get everything off my chest I can then relax and try not to think about it again!
Have you got any magazine work coming up?
Yes and No! Nothing of particular to note.
How is your foundation going, what do you enjoy most about charity work?
The foundation is going well, it’s very satisfying helping others and it’s a good feeling knowing that people benefit from the foundation. Playing golf for a living is a huge privilege like playing any sport as a living, so I think it is important to give something back.
It must be a huge honour being an ambassador for the R&A, what will this involve?
Being the R & A Working for Golf Ambassador is a huge honour – I am constantly amazed what the R & A do for the game and I hope with my global schedule I am well placed to help with various projects including grassroot development, rules education, taking part in biomechanical equipment testing sessions and support the work of the R & A foundation.
How is your 2011 schedule shaping up, will it be another full on year?
Yes – I’m playing a similar schedule to last year, the golfing year is longer though as the Race to Dubai finishes in December.
What’s the thinking behind your new practice putting stroke and do you feel it’s working?
Yes I do feel like it’s working – it puts me in my ultimate putting position as quickly as possible and ensures that I don’t need to change my position from practice to the actual put which is good. It keeps my eyes in the same position.
